When the Bestival organisation began making a feature of the audience becoming part of the show, its Isle of Wight home was an ideal location to source some of the leading costume producers to ply their trade. Shademakers were part of the trend to provide this spectacle and having a local base could provide more structure and construction. With an active involvement of the Arts Council we were able to influence how festivals were to realise how organisers should understand the safety, risk and health aspects of working with large costumed performers in crowds. We began by creating a compound within the main site where all performances and parades would start and end. The production of the Shady Lady with its in-built stage provided a day and evening performance platform with a programme of Carnival and parade related shows. The format was repeated at Camp Bestival and a guarantee that each consecutive year, new costume was showcased. Our inclusion at Bestival lasted seven years.
